The CLIMAAX Network Expands: 37 More European Regions to Receive Climate Risk Assessment Support

Article written by Cristina Sanz Rutherford – Policy and Project Officer

The CLIMAAX project has reached a significant milestone: with the conclusion of its second and final open call for applications, an additional 37 European regions have been selected to receive support to conduct Climate Risk Assessments (CRAs) in their territories.

Representing 19 countries, these regions will benefit from over EUR 6.6 million in funding to conduct this analysis.

This brings the total to 69 regions participating in the CLIMAAX project, which now provides more than EUR 12 million in combined support for the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. Please find the CLIMAAX Fact Sheet here.

EURADA is proud to be a member of the CLIMAAX consortium, actively contributing to stakeholder engagement and the mobilisation of regional actors in the climate adaptation community.

These newly selected regions now join a network committed to strengthening resilience against the impacts of climate change through tailored risk assessments based on CLIMAAX’s theoretical Framework and Toolbox, which includes data-informed planning and collaborative working through the Community of Practice.

The final CLIMAAX call for applications closed in October 2024 and received a strong response with 263 proposals. After an initial eligibility check, 185 proposals were deemed evaluable and assessed. Priority was given to proposals with high vulnerability and low adaptive capacity. This was determined using the Vulnerability Index developed by the JRC Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre.

With the latest group of selected regions now confirmed, CLIMAAX enters a new and impactful phase. Over the coming months, all 69 regions have begun or will begin implementing their Climate Risk Assessments with technical support from the consortium.

Among the selected beneficiaries are several EURADA member regions—from Spain, Poland, Italy, and beyond—highlighting the strength of our network in driving forward regional climate resilience efforts. For a full list of CLIMAAX beneficiaries, please click here.
