First EURADA-IGL training programme on how to become an experimental development agency

by Maite Fernández-Aliseda Tolosa - Global training scholarship at EURADA

Across Europe, policymakers working in innovation, economic development and productivity growth face a complex and continuously evolving system. Often there is limited evidence of how to most effectively influence change, but this can be addressed by turning the current model of policymaking upside down through experimentation.

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the value randomised experiments can provide to public programmes and there are increasing opportunities to run experiments in the European innovation and growth ecosystems. However, to make the most of this approach, policymakers need to have the necessary skills to know when and how to best apply experimental methods.

In order to support economic development agencies in acquiring these skills, EURADA in partnership with the Innovation Growth Lab, based by Nesta (the UK innovation foundation) developed the “Policy Experimentation for Innovation and Regional Development Agencies” training programme. On Thursday 27 January, IGL and EURADA hosted the introductory presentation to the training programme. You can access the recording of the session through the following link.

This nine-session programme will allow you to learn basic skills and techniques to make your agency more experimental and evidence-based. You will learn the direct benefits of running randomised experiments but also how the ethos behind this approach has much wider applications. This training programme is designed for project managers in European development agencies, although any policymaker who is keen to participate is welcome to join the programme. The nine sessions take place approximately once a month, from March to December 2022.
