Stakeholders involved in the Renewable Energy Sector shared experiences during the last Stakeholder Café of the H2020 XPRESS Project

Written by Nora Scantamburlo, Junior Project Officer

On the 11th May 2022, EURADA co-organised in Lisbon the second and last Stakeholder Cafè of Portugal in the framework of the H2020 XPRESS Project, now at its final stages.

This initiative, at the end of a three-year course, aimed to explore and collect experiences and solutions for the implementation of investments in the renewable energy sector in Portugal, specifically with respect to the role covered by public administrations and innovative companies in the development of Green Public Procurement (GPP).

The Green Public Procurement – GPP – process, the process whereby public authorities seek to procure goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle when compared to goods, services and works with the same primary function, turned out to have room of improvement in the growing Portuguese environment. For instance, it has been highlighted how the participation of companies in GPP and their collaboration with public actors is crucial for innovation in the renewable energy sector since they are actually eager to be CO2 neutral and environmentally aware.

It emerged that great opportunities are present in Portugal and Spain regarding renewables, notably with respect to renewable gases and batteries as well as to the already widely studied solar energy photovoltaics. The combination of these three key technologies, together with Green Public Procurement, can be paradigm changers and place both countries in a quite relevant position.

Given the great topicality of the issues of sustainability and energy transition, XPRESS and EURADA's work does not stop but continues during the next months with the last Co-creation Policy Workshop taking place in Brussels on the 31st May, and on the 29th-30th June 2022 with the Final Conference of this H2020 project.
