EU-Singapore matchmaking event

Written by Ivana Rae ALMORA – Project Coordinator

With a delegation of 24 representatives from the EU and 52 representatives from Singapore, over 176 meetings were held in the EU-Singapore matchmaking event under the framework of the Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC event (ITAP).

From 18-20 October 2022, the European Commission and Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) jointly organized the EU-Singapore matchmaking event, with the support of the EU Delegation to Singapore and the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry and facilitated by the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP) and the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN). The event sought to support cluster cooperation for strategic business partnerships taking advantage of the provisions of the Free Trade Agreement (EUSFTA) signed between the European Union and Singapore in October 2018 and implemented in November 2019.

The overall objective of the event was to promote information exchange and networking opportunities for European cluster organisations and their members with counterparts from Singapore. Specifically for the participants, the event was an opportunity to strengthen EU-Singapore cluster cooperation for the benefit of their members and to identify potential areas of common interest for cooperation and synergies, in terms of the sectoral, value chain, and market focus of their SMEs and other companies.

When asked about his impressions of the event, Max Pöhlmann, a Project & Cluster manager from BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH (DE) said:

“I think for us the Asian market is a very important market. We think that Singapore might be a very good point of first entry for a lot of companies. This event gave us a really nice opportunity to come here. Learn as much as we can about the market about the local capabilities about everything that's going on here (…) I'm looking forward to speaking to a lot of people that could help our companies take a little foothold here in the future

Singapore has become a significant trading partner to many EU Member States. On a general note, the economy in Singapore is defined by its effective financing and openness. Singapore’s economy is largely oriented around trade, with diverse industrial sectors contributing to high levels of growth.
